Find the Right Coven for You!

By Jean Duranti

So, you want to join a coven! That’s great. Now what??  How do you find a coven that’s right for you?  Covens come in all flavors and on first look, it may be difficult to know if it’s a good fit. So here are questions to ask the leaders of any group that you are exploring.

  1.  Is it a secret coven, bound by oath of secrecy or a public coven which has no secrecy?
  2. What is the “mix” of coven members? I.E. . All women, all male, mixed?
  3. Does the coven include LGBTQ members?
  4. Does the group have a tradition or focus of their worship?  I.E. Dianic, Egyptian, mixed, etc.?
  5. How many members are in the coven (if public, what is the approximate size)?
  6. What is the commitment for members? Do they have to attend all ceremonies or can come and go as they please?
  7. Are classes and/or rituals in person or online?
  8. Are there monthly or annual dues?  What other financial responsibilities are required?
  9. How often do they meet, what days and times?
  10. What is the length of instruction, if any?  Are there formal initiations? Elevations?
  11. Is there a hierarchy within the coven?
  12. Is the coven an offshoot of a larger coven group?
  13. Are you required to have special robes? Tools? Cords? Etc.
  14. Do they provide classes to teach you the ways of the coven?
  15. Can you hive off and create your own coven after a period of time?
  16. How creative can you be in the rituals?
  17. Is there a formal Book of Shadows?
  18. Do you have transportation to the rituals, the classes?
  19. Does the coven’s ritual schedule conflict with your lifestyle?
  20. Is there a formal process for leaving the coven if so desired?
  21. Do they celebrate Full Moons and Sabats?
  22. Is this a single coven or do they have other covens in other areas?

As you can see, there is more to covens than joining and participating.  You need to follow your instincts regarding if the conveners are a good match with your personality, or temperament and your level of commitment.  As you research groups you will find other questions to ask and you understand the management of covens.  The good thing is there are lots to choose from out there.  You may want to consider an online group vs in person group as an example.  Enjoy the journey and discovery.
